Copilot AI ‘Microslop’ Chat Ban Is Not Censorship—Says Microsoft Microslop

ftfy

So they won’t mind if we start calling it “NoPilot” then?

I also like FauxPilot.

faux - adj - artificial or imitation; fake.

Not to* be confused with the OSS alternative, also named fauxpilot.

They’re within their rights and it’s definitely not something they want to have take off, whether it’s accurate or not.

But apparently their brand management doesn’t know who Barbara Streisand is.

The homeowner?

No, that’s MechaStriesand.

It’s “brand management”

Microsoft will have plenty more missteps as they continue to fall from relevance.

“After carefully considering the matter, we have determined that we have done nothing wrong.”

Next up: Gaslighting!

Microslop’s Slopya Nadella is getting butt hurt

Censorship is not censorship – says Microslop.

Lol microshit

Cry harder, Microslop

they are right. it’s their discord and so they make the rules. it’s not censorship.

but it is very much letting us know that it got under their skin. and so i will keep using that name everywhere i can

It’s still censorship. Self imposed censorship is still censorship.

Maybe they’d prefer “Macroslop”?

That’s just going to cause people to invent an even more insulting word.

Well, here they are right. Censorship is an action by a government, not by a company.

This does not change the fact that the Streisand effect for this stupid move is well deserved.

As the other person said, you are quite wrong.

Censor - to suppress or delete as objectionable

No…

The first amendment protects against censorship by the American government, ideally at least.

Private companies can and do censor shit constantly, and that is definitely censorship.

You’ve just seen people repeat it about the first amendment, didn’t understand it, and are attempting and failing to regurgitate it

And if people see you using it wrong, they’ll start off from an even worse position.

All you’re doing is exacerbating the problem you think your fixing.

Comments from other communities

And pirating Windows isn’t stealing, since buying it doesn’t entitle you to ownership of the software. But we’ll just have to continue to disagree, won’t we?

On the other hand, is it really worth pirating Microslop products at this point?

You make a fine point.

Did they remember to add Micro$lop to their slur filter?

… says Microslop

Fixed it.

So did I, thanks for the idea

The moderators of online communities have every right to manage the content of those communities as they see fit, as long as they’re within legal bounds.

That said, individuals also have the right to call said moderators a bunch of clueless asshats when they make dumbass decisions, as long as they’re abiding by the policies of the space where they’re saying it.

Microsoft banning the word “Microslop” from their Discord isn’t censorship is well within their legal rights, but they are a bunch of clueless asshats for thinking that it was a good idea.

Bro, forbidding words is straight up censorship.

In the context of the 1st Amendment it’s not illegal censorship, as private entities aren’t bound by the 1st Amendment in their own private spaces in the same way the government is. But in a more general sense you are correct, I think my brain just strongly associates accusations of censorship (in a US context at least) with accusations of 1st Amendment violations. I’ll adjust the phrasing.

The government is not the only entity capable of censorship. All Lemmy communities with content restrictions are practicing censorship, for example.

That (curating communities) isnt censorship (in most cases), it is simply moderation. Not all restrictions on speech are censorship. It isnt censorship to ban yelling fire in movie theater, neither is it censorship to stop hate speech or threats of violence. Regulations on speech are not always censorship.

I however still think it is stupid to ban the word microslop. It doesnt hurt anyone.

It’s legal censorship. Kinda like how I’m kicking you out of my house if you go around heiling hitler.

I think it would be more like saying “you’re on a bad path” to a friend in their house, and then getting kicked out.

It’s only censorship when the government does it.

Ah, yes, when it’s from corporate, it’s called “Brand management”.

Not according to any definition I can find.

I think that definition simply doesn’t reflect how the word is used anymore.

In English, the definition is based on how the word is used, not the other way around.
