EDIT: Oh my god, sorry, I’m an idiot who forgot that the Jellyfin subtitles setting menu had a save button you needed to press. ALSO, Simultaneously, I posted this earlier than I intended; I thought to myself “OK I’ll try this one last thing and if that doesn’t work then I’ll give up and ask for help”, and then went and wrote this post while I waited for the DVD to rip - and then I went and posted it as soon as I was done writing, without waiting for the one last attempt to finish. It turns out that removing the --subtitle scan flag fixes the problem. So I double shouldn’t have posted this. Sorry for taking up your time, I saw an option to hide this post so I think I’ll be doing that now.

My parents are looking into getting their own NAS to replace iCloud. I don’t really have much experience with that, and zero experience with apple stuff. They are also not very techy, but at least enthusiastic.

Hey folks. My understanding of the self-hosting world is that Proxmox is kinda the king of the roost, and deservedly so. I use it myself both for personal and work projects, and love what it provides. I’ve also used TrueNAS Core/SCALE, and of course just traditional Linux desktop or server distros of various sorts for projects, but out of the corner of my eye has always been sitting XCP-NG. It seems like it could be a real contender in the space.

Hi, I have a problem accessing Paperless-ngx when I’m connected to my home network from a VPN. I’ve tried to make a simple sketch of my setup: Phone –> Wireguard –> Public Internet –> Unifi Wireguard server –> Home Network

There are a few Docker projects I haven’t been able to properly implement in my homelab, only because their images need to be user-compiled and Dockge doesn’t seem to have an option to include the entire repository required for the project compilation in its interface or in the stacks directory. I know I could just host them in a separate directory but I would like my services to be manageable from a single place and following this approach isolates the service from being controlled from Dockge.

What things do you self host (or know about) that are fun/interesting/useful to you? I’m thinking of setting up a home server and am looking for things that would be useful or fun for me to run on it. I want to host things that are useful/fun, but not a project itself (I’ve got enough projects), if that makes sense.

I see n8n everywhere and while I love automation I can’t think of a use case, that couldn’t be realized in Bash instead.

when reading through the jellyfin with chromecast guide i realized that it would probably be less effort to just let the casting api be public, with the added bonus that i could then cast my library to any device that supports it. but that seems like it would paint a giant target on the server.

You’re probably already aware of this, but if you run Docker on linux and use ufw or firewalld - it will bypass all your firewall rules. It doesn’t matter what your defaults are or how strict you are about opening ports; Docker has free reign to send and receive from the host as it pleases.

I recently noticed that my nextcloud instance was missing photos. I have the android app set to automatically upload my photos. When I need to clear up space on my phone, I make a separate backup (because I’m a paranoid SOB and hard drives are relatively cheap). I noticed that nextcloud auto upload missed about 10% of the photos. I’m not going to bash the nextcloud devs, as I recognize that I am using a free product and am owed nothing, but I’m making this post so others are aware of this risk. I’ve been setting up a music server on my home server recently, looking to move away from private hosting options like iBroadcast, but I’ve hit a bit of a snag when it comes to actually accessing my server when away from home.

My current setup is two always-on hard drives hooked up to this two-bay external hard drive docking station plugged into a laptop via USB cable for whatever network sharing I may need. This has been good enough so far, but I’m anticipating the need to expand down the road, i.e. adding a third drive. When that time comes, part of me thinks I oughta just spring for the 4-bay version of what I already have and keep on keeping on. Another part of me thinks maybe I should plan a new build in a mid-ATX case w/ 4 or 5 HDD mounting slots for future expandability.

Hello people I just got my hands on an old PC, and I took it as a sign to finally start my on server. Right now, I’d mostly be looking into running jellyfin since I’m working on a digital music library. On the technical side, I run Mint on my laptop, so I have basic familiarity with Linux. Are there any guides you recommend that will take me through installation of OS to a functional server? Thank you!

edit: Forgot to mention, this issue only affects the desktop client! When using the web client with my browser, I am still logged in.

I want to make use of PiHoles blocklist while I’m outside my network, my WireGuard server which is hosted via my ASUS WRT Merlin router does not appear to respect the DNS = flag on configuration files and just sends all queries through the routers default DNS provider (aka my ISP).

I bought myself a fancy new TLC 11 Nxtpaper Gen 2 with a cool e-ink type display. It’s an android tablet and I’m breaking free from Apple. That means no more Apple Books for my epubs. That also means, I’m now looking for a good solution to annotating epubs/pdfs (mostly highlights) on Android. I’d loveeee it it had some bring your own storage sync (webdav) or just plays well with the local storage for using syncthing etc. What are the best options?

Hi, I’m looking to set up a Hybrid Cloud Infrastructure with my homelab as I’m lacking additional processing power.

So I want to setup a remote backup location at my parents house although they are very mindful about there electricity usage and environmental impact (and so am I) so I don’t want to have to have a pc always on when it doesn’t need to be.

Hi, I’ve had issues for the last days where my services were unreachable via their domains sporadically. They are scattered across 2-3 VMs which are working fine and can be reached by their domain (usually x.my.domain subdomains) via my nginx reverse proxy (running in it’s own Debian vm). The services themself were running fine. My monitoring (Node Exporter/Prometheus) notified me that the conntrack limit on the nginx vm was reached in the timeframes where my services weren’t reachable, so that seems to be the obvious issue.

Apologies for the poor grammar, English IS my first language and so I’m rather flagrant with runons.

TL;DR: Unsure if I should just run Syncthing, or do a Nextcloud. Tailscale seems at risk of enshittification, so do I find alternatives or just use it for ease? Is Immich easy enough to set up without Tailscale? Stick with docker or podman for ease? Are externsl drives easy to work with? Should my RAID1 be NTFS or Ext4?

Maybe it’s well known but I just came across journalctl-desktop-notification and I find it very useful so I thought I’d mention it. It’s basically a bash script that monitors systemd’s journal and pops up a notification when there are warnings or errors (or anything else you want to make it catch besides the default config).

First my specific questions, down below more info: - how do you use ansible? Is there a good source for roles or playbooks to set up services? I feel like ansible is 30% more headache right now during config. - how do you deal with motivation loss? - how do you deal with the overwhelming amount of choices and information and disciplines (networking, storage, VMS, Linux..) that comes with selfhosting? - how do you find the sweetspot between ease of use, ease of set up, security, redundancy? I feel like I am maybe too pranaoid to loose my data again (dropped a hard drive many years back, I lost all of my projects) - maybe overall, how do you manage your perfectionism?

Self hosting helps make the internet more decentralized, but at the end of the day someone else owns that series of tubes.

For those of you that use docker, how do you make sure your docker-compose.yml (and possibly .env) files stay current with the project’s ongoing updates? I’m sure there’s an easier way than what I’m doing which is manually getting the latest ones and checking the diffs in vscodium. And I’m sure some git magic already takes care of this but I’ve been slow in learning git beyond the VERY basics. Thanks!

Reading earlier comments in this community made me consider documenting the workings of my homelab to some extent, ie. docker configuration, credentials, ports and links of my services. I’ve tried to make it consistent and organised but it still feels half baked and insufficient. Everyone suggests documenting everything you do in your homelab but don’t state how. Since I’ve hardly had experience running my own server, I would really appreciate observing the blueprint of some other fellow selfhoster for copying or taking inspiration from rather than considering documentation to be ‘left as an exercise for the reader’.

- As a yunohost user I find the yunohost discourse forum really useful - but I also find that tracking posts and discussions in the forum - the many other forums for other software I use - and then related conversations on ActivityPub time consuming.

Currently I have random docs/how-tos for my network stored in a forgejo repo, just a bunch of READMEs. I’d like to somehow make that a bit more official, I like writing it in markdown/git and having source control, but was wondering if anyone has a good wiki tool they like that can consume that and make it more hostable? Thanks!

I’ve been using Thunderbird to sort out my junk email for a while, ever since I walked away from my Gmail account. Thunderbird does a great job, but it does mean it has to stay running somewhere.

I’ve been dabbling with selfhosting for a bit now (home assistant and nextcloud), but it’s clear that I lack a fundamental understanding of networking. For example: - I’ve got OpenWRT on my router, but no idea what I’m doing when it comes to firewall settings, DNS, DHCP, etc. - I’ve got a domain thru Porkbun, but no idea how to properly setup my DNS settings there to route to my local machine. - I’ve got NGINX running in a docker container in a VM and can get to the UI on my local network, but no idea what I’m doing wrong with my attempts at a reverse proxy.

I am playing TTRPG remotely. For this, I was using far.app, a js app, which permit to link Game Master and Players in order to share Character sheets, dice roles, some index cards (set up as a “scene").

LOL Not really, but boy it has been a day. Started at 7:00 am and I finally resolved (?) the issue. In fact I’ve got through every last bit of my network, and at this point in the evening, I actually don’t have a solid reason why the issue was present. Something in my VPN settings glitched, or something got triggered on pFsense and got hung up….something, something with Tailscale. It wasn’t CLoudflare this time. LOL

Hello, Does anyone have by any chance an ansible playbook to setup docker on a debian trixie?

Has anyone gotten navidrome mobile apps to work with traefik and authentik sso? I used this article to get the webapp sso to work, but mobile apps won’t work even with the /rest path supposedly being bypassed. the traefik config was copied/modified for my setup, so I think the article is still missing something.
