Has anyone migrated from CasaOS to ZimaOS?

How do you monitor your homelab network for internal attackers? E.g. you have a publicly available service and theres a vulnerability that you miss or you pull a bad update and suddenly someone has access to your VM/machine/container. How could you increase the chances of automatically detecting that?

So today after almost a year of learning what self hosting and what a nas and raid configuration was, I was to get a used hp prodesk 600 g6 mini and install zimaos on it. Zimaos really made things a lot simpler than I thought it was going to be. I was easily able to install portainer and immich and it wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be.

I am switching to Databasus for backing up my databases. Postgres has been fine but on two separate mariadb databases, Databasus cannot create read only users. Everything is on docker compose on separate stacks with a bridge network backup-db between the database containers and Databasus.

Synology is for work files, photos, Unifi, and a few other misc items. Right now Unraid is just for Jellyfin w/ Tailscale access. Homeassistnat literally just runs a dashboard and a few lights + plugs but I mostly went back to wyze for that. Raspiblitz is for bitcoin node and lightning.

I want to start with self hosting something available from internet. Currently I have jellyfin, nas etc but everything is available in local network.

I know a while back there was a kerfuffle because syncthing-fork for Android went dark, and then a new person showed up and claimed everything was cool and they’d been privately given the keys or something, and people were concerned. I pinned my fdroid version to the at-that-time-current release until we got clarity.

Hi, so I have a little Proxmox box with two VMs: VM1 and VM2 which is a clone of VM1. I change the mac of VM2 to avoid conflict and I reset the machine ID of VM1. I then have a seperate pfSense machine machine that that acts as router, firewall and DHCP server. Proxmox is on the 192.168.20.1/24 domain. In the DHCP server, Proxmox get IP 192.168.20.8 explicitly assigned. All good to this point. I’ve set VMs on pfSense to get the 192.168.20.9X addresses assigned. VM1 gets 192.168.20.91 assigned, while VM2 should be getting 192.168.20.92.

I have spent a long time at Synology Photos, along with my family. We have tags and albums. Is there a good way to migrate? I’m even open to migrating manually (album by album) if I could trust the process.

I want to host some LLM’s locally and use more advanced models. Since new hardware is out of the question, I think I should be able to pull something off buying some yesteryear equipment on ebay etc. Did anybody attempt such a project? Does it scale horizontally? (I.e. can I connext two boxes to overcome single box slowness?)

Hi all ! I want to use xcp-ng for my homelab because why not, terraform and I like to use more uncommon tools (it often bites me afterward but it’s funnier this way). Right now, I am on a road block because I can’t set a management interface, and I can’t do it because using DHCP times out and I can’t set static IP on my ISP’s router. Anyone with an idea ?

I’ve been thinking about this more and more. According to the sidebar, this community is “A place to share alternatives to popular online services that can be self-hosted without giving up privacy or locking you into a service you don’t control.” Based on that I don’t think Plex qualifies.

I currently run all my self-hosted apps either on Podman in a VM or in LXCs on Proxmox. For hardware, I’m using a Chinese-made mini computer with an Intel N150 and 16GB of DDR5 RAM that I bought before the whole AI hype started. I also have a Synology NAS that I use mainly for media and photo storage.

I currently have a secondary pool (with raidz2) that I was originally going to use for my important documents, such as storage for Paperless-ngx, as raidz offers corruption detection and repair. The pool is encrypted.

I decided to try Nextcloud after not using it for 10 years, and after testing it a bit I find myself turned off by the email (and other profile options) being visible to “everyone” by default.

Picked up an ix500 scansnap and wondering about suggested workflows for going paperless. My intention is to scan a bunch of documents, but haven’t delved deeply into how this will actually flow on the software level. I know I’ll need to OCR the scanned documents, and my base setup is:

I wanted to shared my enthusiasm, which makes me feel like a little boy (despite me being 50+) fascinated by how such complex systems can be managed so easily by novices. I started using Proxmox recently. I had a machine running one VM with various docker images installed. But NVMe was tiny. So I setup another node and got it to share the same NFS share on the NAS, where I had saved full backups of the VM. Once added the NFS share to the new node (with a bigger ZFS local partition) I simply restored the VM from the NFS share that had been backed up from the original node. It seemlessly imported and started. Then I cloned on the new node so that I could get it on the new ZFS partition. Now the next task is to get a bigger NVMe on the original machine, install Proxmox from scratch, and add to cluster so that it shared the backup NFS share. I just then need to understand how to get HA up and running so that VMs are always synced flawlessly. Proxmox is super brilliant. I feel like I have a data center at home :-) I could not imagine this system was so flexible and relatively easy to use. The people that deliver and contribute to this stuf are super cool. A couple of proxmox nodes, a Truenas scale NAS and a good backup strategy and your data is really safe and rock solid … I hope :-)

So I’ve gotten to the point where my homelab has moved to a fun way to mess around with tech to starting to replace things like google photos and OneDrive. So as my next project I plan to add resiliency and backup solutions as low-cost/efficiently as I can. I’m thinking that 3 physical machines is a good and safe next step.

I don’t know a ton about the internals of federated systems, it’s been on my todo list for a while but it keeps getting pushed down by other things. But I still like that the fediverse exists and I’d like to pitch in, even if it’s only a few bucks of processor time / month.

So, I’ve been running offsite copies to OVH S3 bucket via PBS running as an VM but I ran into an issue that verification of the backups is so slow that they’re practically unusable.

Finally managed to get my hands on 2x1TB NVMe’s. Budgets are tight these days … :-) They are Crucial P310 … hope they are reliable, although I suspect nowhere near Samsung stuff.

My homelab is essentially my own passion project and only really I access it except for when I spin up the occasional game server for friends.

So here is my dilemma. I have a Truenas server that basically acts as a file server. I also have a little machine running Proxmox. I have an NFS share on the Proxmox machine for saving VM backups so that they are secure. On the Proxmox VM, I want to install docker instances. Some of them require large data repositories so I can’t have the data stored on the VM. I’m thinking of creating an “apps” dataset on the Truenas machine, then exporting it via NFS and mounting on the VM. Then I redirect all the Docker volumes on this NFS share. Say I have Docker_App1 on the Proxmox VM, then I would create a folder in the /mnt/Truenas_share/Docker_App1. Do you think this will work? The alternative is to create an individual dataset on the Truenas machine for each Docker_App but this feels overkill and a nightmare to setup and maintain. How are you managing Docker volumes over NFS?

Recently I’ve installed luci-app-banip on my OpenWrt router and blocked most countries from accessing my services on my network. Not seeing why I would want any of that traffic I also blocked the whole of the ARIN registry, responsible for IP addresses from Canada and the United States. Edit: Note this is only for inbound traffic. Outbound traffic is allowed no matter the target country.

Is there a good android app thats dedicated to reading epubs from your ABS instance? I dislike a lot of things about the native reader in the native app and was wondering if there is something (’Still’ seems good but its just for ios)

Our family watches TV trough IPTV and via streaming services and it’s been fine enough for quite some time. However, now one of our broadcast companies got in a fight about streaming contract with our IPTV provider and we lost a few of the channels. Not that big of a deal for me personally, but apparently there’s some shows the rest of the family wants to see. This isn’t the first time and likely it won’t be the last.

Do you have any advice or suggestions about it? - Hardware (what should be enough for a local PC, or VPS…) - Software (OS [Debian, Yunohost, other…], “containerization” (Docker, virtual machines?), dashboard, management, backups, VPN tunneling…) - “Utilities” to host (Lemmy, Peertube, Matrix, Mastodon, Actual Budget, Jellyfin, Forgejo, Invidious/Piped, local Pi-Hole, email, dedicated videogame servers like for Minecraft, SearXNG, personal file storage like Drive, AI [in the future, when I can afford a rig that can run a local model decently]…)

Hey y’all, looking to land my first DevOps Engineering role soon, and figured I should use enterprise software as much as possible for some resume building and personal practice. For reference, I’ve set up a NAS server once before but haven’t got too much experience outside of that. Basing this on some DevOps Engineers I’ve talked to IRL and some friends who hire engineers, but wanted extra community feedback.

Does anyone run one of the above on a Pi 4 and can share their experience how good or bad they run?
